Sound bearing ahead to port. I head to depth 40-60 meters for better listening conditions. Initially suspect forward escort. At periscope depth I make out the convoy as: 6 ships with 2 destroyers as starboard flank escort. Interval about 2000-3000 meters. Intend single shots, because course and speed are known (45°, 7 knots). Shortly after sighting the after destroyer strikes out and comes out quickly. Passing distance was about 200 meters (to my starboard side). Despite Asdic locating I believe I remain unnoticed. When the destroyer is abeam to starboard, the periscope cuts under. I have Tube II quickly made ready to fire on two overlapping steamers (13.15 hours) tube runner! Hideous din! Destroyer 200 meters abeam and I cut under. An uncommonly disgusting situation because apparently the destroyer now notices me (from the tube runner?). Was very loud, increases speed. I must break off the attack because the boat remains cut under. A minute after shooting, (tube runner) which had now slipped out, there followed a heavy detonation (depth charge or did the torpedo go high order?). While going deep 13.20 hours 3 detonations (depth charges!), estimated distance 200-300 meters. Boat shakes a bit. No damage. For over two hours 1 destroyer searches with Asdic and listening (stops frequently). No further depth charges, despite the boat being overrun several times. Went as deep as T plus 60 meters. Used Bolde twice. Then went slowly higher and surfaced at 16.15 hours. In the direction of the convoy an aircraft at about altitude 1000 meters, range = 12000 meters. Showed small silhouette until out of sight. Radio Message still cannot be sent because of the afternoon frequency change and still no tuning. |

S u p p l y : |
1.) |
Meeting was good (including Recognition Signal exchange). |
2.) |
Fuel oil transfer according to plan and smoothly (233 cbm in 7 hours.) |
3.) |
Provisions transfer considerably complicated and delayed because in addition to inflatable boat as cargo boat only 1 small boat from the supplier as towing boat (Launch of the motorboat not tried because of the poor condition of the loading equipment. |
4.) |
Signal personnel at tanker at a strength of 1:1 is not enough for group supply. |
5.) |
Beyond fuel and provisions the supplier was not fitted out for supply (hardly any spare parts etc.). |
6.) |
The kindness of the tanker Captain to the last crew member of "CHARLOTTE SCHLIEMANN" was exemplary. |
7.) |
Supply was great for morale of own boat and for the tanker crew. |
8.) |
Weather conditions throughout were consistently good. |

Vessel in sight ahead 10° to starboard. Very small silhouette. Southwest course. Maneuvered ahead. Takes a long time because the unidentified vessel runs at high speed. At times smokes heavily. Given the small size of the vessel and relatively bright night I believe a surface attack is hopeless. Maneuver ahead for submerged day attack. Vessel zigzags between 210 and 250°. General course 235°. |

Dived for submerged attack. Am positioned exactly ahead of the vessel. Nasty weather conditions. Completely calm and mirror-flat sea. The vessel seems to be a special vessel. Small (estimated about 1000 tons) 2 high thin masts, small bridge between masts, astern a very heavily smoking smokestack. Because I cannot sea anything in the air search periscope for a long time because of the strong mirage I must proceed by sound bearings. It is a very long time until the vessel is distinguished in the periscope. At present steers to the west and runs at low speed. Intend a two fan. |

Ran in. Convoy consists of 3 ships. First and third ships are very large, estimated 10000-12000 tons loaded, very long and little superstructure. May be tankers. Second ship estimated 7000 tons. While closing on the hound's curve suddenly 50° to port ahead the after destroyer emerges with a sharp target angle. Initially hold course, then turn away briefly to show him a small silhouette. Turned right back because the destroyer again showed a broad target angle. Am still about 2500 meters to the convoy. An escort vessel with a sharp target angle emerges from behind the third steamer. Lies exactly towards me. A further escort vessel is positioned between the first and second steamers in the lee. Destroyer now passes me to port at about 900 meters distance (despite this I must show him a broad silhouette because the shots must go in the next moment due to the oncoming patrol vessel (by chance) whether he sees me or not). |

Set data: Enemy speed 10 knots, depth 5 meters, bow right target angle 70°, range = 1800 meters. 80 seconds after fan hit amidships on the first vessel. In a tremendous heavy fiery explosion the vessel (tanker?) breaks in two and sinks. At the moment of the detonation it is bright as day so that the destroyer (distance now about 1200 meters) must have seen me because again while turning for a stern shot I had to show him a abroad silhouette. 30 seconds later a hit on the third ship (the second was actually intended!) heavy detonation. High black smoke column. Vessel burns. Second steamer no effect. Broke through between the now approaching destroyer and |

Large detonation heard in the boat. With it heavy flames on the burning ship. Apparently a heavy internal detonation. Previously the second escort vessel had gone alongside the hit ship and had red and white lights set. Accept that the crew was taken over (the forward destroyer (which was heard) did not appear). Initially ran off to the east. Reloaded, then maneuvered ahead again on the old course to eventually make a submerged attack on the last ship. |

After this attack there began with brief interruptions a 3-day long pursuit by flying boats. During the submerged transits at greater and lesser intervals went to periscope depth. Continually an aircraft distinguished in the air search periscope. If no aircraft were distinguished, surfaced. After more or less short times was flown at again. Because the Fu.M.B. has given no indications up to now was no longer deployed. |

Was attacked by surface warships, am not clear to dive. My position is KO 8252, course to the northwest. |

This Short Signal was given optically to Lüth, and questioned whether he already had. After a long time Lüth sent that he only received the first clear Short Signal at 16.47 hours. Therefore it must have been incorrectly encoded. Proposed continuing along because to now three positions were given and there is no clarity. Lüth passes optically that possibly we will have to take over the crew. |

Passed immediately to Lüth that in no case should we proceed further to the south, that we should move back and forth at current position, await more from Bartels, reported own position and attempted to send the Short Signal which was not acknowledged by Control. Because Volume was very low (also on Norddeich), postponed by suggestion from Lüth. |
16.58 |
Gave course instructions to Lüth which were acknowledged, and came to easterly course. (course 90°), Lüth's further behavior is not understood. After first passing his agreement optically, he briefly turned to an easterly course and passed as a complete surprise to me: |
"It is enough that one stays here. I will continue my return transit due to fuel. You've got more and can then catch me again." After passing he turned immediately again to course 215°, without waiting further. |

To even maintain optical communications (gradual twilight) I must turn after. |
Initially I pass to him: |
It is about Bartels now, you will not starve." |
Then: "If the crew of Bartels must be taken over, we must remain together here. Moreover it will only be a few hours and you will get your fuel.." |
To which Lüth passes: "Many thanks for the fuel. My take over hoses are out of service." |
I passed: "Kapitän to Kapitän Please come to easterly course. I do not understand you." and turned |

Stuck with decision (above all due to the weather conditions). Bartels must be free on southerly transit, otherwise he would certainly have transmitted. Because after moonrise with obscured horizon and low cloud deck visibility has not improved, I dove at 22.25 hours to detect sound from Bartels. |

Turned towards after recognizing perfectly. Lüth goes before my bow to the port side. Distance still about 3 nm. I show him a broad silhouette and then by Morse call sign: Formation course and speed. Lüth now bears 50° ahead to port. Distance about 1 nm. After I passed this I came to course 220° and assume the correct position for 50° echelon. However Lüth does not close instead runs about 1 mile further away. Apparently wants to go on alone! Did not reply to my flag signals - Incomprehensible - |

Comments of the Befehlshabers der Unterseeboote |
on the K.T.B. of "U 196" (Kentrat) from 13.8. - 23.10.1943. |
The first patrol of the proven commander with new boat was very long, but little favored by fortune. The convoy attack on 3 August finally brought wothwhile attack opportunities and deserved success. The long duration of the patrol meant special tension and stress for boat and crew, the successful execution deserves special recognition. |
To the emergency message from Bartels at 20 August it would have been the correct and most obvious measure to go at top speed to the damaged boat. The two boats concerned considered these notifications from Leadership as a routine matter acting only after orders from Leadership, "U-196" complied only after repeated, explicit orders. This must be disapproved. |
The commander of "U-181" (Kkp. Lüth) was correct respect to his actions and decisions on 20 August, furthermore there is no criticism. Differences in understanding and deficient communications capabilities brought about the unfortunate situation, the detailed rendering in the K.T.B. was not necessary. |
Accredited success: 3 freighter 26000 GRT sunk. |
