        That turned the tables and suddenly I'm positioned favorably.

        All boats operate on "Rüggeberg" report.  
        Course 320.  Operated on "Rüggeberg" contact keeping reports.

        "Rüggeberg" report contact hourly.  The other boats after first sighting strive to maneuver ahead with loose contact, to attack after the onset of darkness.  Strive for a together attack.  If contact is broken by "Rüggeberg" all boats close energetically.

        During the attack the convoy zigzagged to 80°, so that the entire enormous group is beyond the range of my maneuver ahead.  I count over 25 large steamers, mostly passenger freighters.  
        Ahead on the flank and behind each 2 two-smokestack destroyers as remote escort, all around modern one-smokestack destroyers as close escort  
        Despite collision course and repeated GF I could no longer get to shooting range, so that the hard fought for attack must be given up.

        CE 2980 failed day attack on convoy by port zigzag.  About 25 ships, mostly passenger freighters, remote and close escort.  To starboard all 9 modern American destroyers.  Convoy course 80°.  172 cbm.

        Despite running off at AK the destroyer comes closer quickly.

        So even penetrating the aft screen is not very promising.

        Assumed to be the port forward escort.  Was initially forced off to the northwest and east by the escorts, then closed energetically to the south for a day attack from ahead.  While running off to the east the convoy had zigzagged to course 80°, so that on coming in sight again I am ahead to starboard.  I hoped to be ahead of the convoy in an hour.
