Note:  The positions in the table above and in the Google Earth patrol summary are derived from the KTB and in many cases do not match those set forth in authoritative references such as Jürgen Rohwer, Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two or the Uboat.net website.  The goal here is to present the picture relative to the U-boat and not the absolute position that the ship was attacked or sank.

02.10   Steered in the center between Rathlin Island and the Mull of Cantyre, because by my observation the destroyers and patrol vessels used this route.  Drove up to the reported barrier at periscope depth, to get cross bearings from the peacetime burning lighthouses on Rathlin and Cantyre to be able to steer exactly in the center.

03.26   Am 1 mile off the barrier.  Went to depth 20 meters, because it is pitch black and patrol vessels may not have been seen in time.
    04.00 AM 6437

05.55   At periscope depth.  Passed the barrier.  No patrol vessels or mines noticed.  Because it is pitch black and no patrol vessel is seen or heard, I decide to snorkel again until the break of day, to renew the air in the boat, charge the battery and save current for moving back and forth off the entrance to the Clyde.  Intend to explore this entrance and then run into the Clyde, to take position there, because there is less current.

10.30   7 depth charges in the vicinity, without danger for the boat.

11.45   1 depth charge close over the boat, however only few noticeable failures.

11.58   A second, well-placed depth charge.  Further minor failures.  The two depth charges were thrown from a patrol vessel which found the boat by Asdic and other tracking devices, despite the approximately 10 U-boat hunting vessels working with circular saws and which circled it at close range.  At times the circular saws were abruptly turned off.

Suspect that boat has also betrayed itself by using the echo sounder while running off and heading for the bottom. Use was necessary, however, because boat was close to the Clyde barrier.  In the future, in close proximity to the enemy, I will limit the use of the echo sounder to emergencies.

The sound conditions are so bad when lying on the bottom, that calculating by the quick shift of the bearing (in 5 minutes about 90°) the vessel was first heard at range = 2000 meters with Volume 0-1.  This is not enough time to get from the bottom to periscope depth or shooting depth.

Suspect as cause, that the Bodenkanzel [bottom pulpit - housing for GHG hydrophones protruding from the keel forward] was over spilled by sand.  Therefore after the battery is full again, intend not to lie on the bottom with opposing current.

For two days in the over deck a steady growing stronger rattle and banging of metal parts is heard.  One of these sounds comes from the rod antenna, that at KF rattles in the driving flow.  The rubber pad seems to be worn through.  Ran towards the Irish coast to surface and correct the sounds.

Second snorkel period is from 04.00 to 06.00 hours.  At the same time Ireland Circuit Very Low Frequency Program time.  This is the only way to receive Radio Messages, as Shortwave Ireland Circuit can never be heard louder than 1-2.  Afterwards surface to send weather report.
