The following excerpts from Kriegstagebucher for information:
  1.) Kriegetagebuch "U-38":
"Dived and shot a G 7 a torpedo.  Range amounted to about 1200 meters.  By the stopwatch the torpedo detonated after about 400 meters.  Water column lay directly in the direction of the ship so that it could not be determined if the ship was hit.  After the 2nd shot, which hit under the bridge, the steamer was a little down by the bow but did not sink.  After the 3rd shot, which also hit forward of the bridge sinking was not observed.  4th torpedo shot, which hit in the engine room.  Steamer broke in the middle and sank."

  2.) Kriegetagebuch "U-41":
"During yesterday's night attempt on shadows, the outer tube doors of 2 tubes had already been opened.  Today, when maintaining the torpedoes, it turns out that the safety wire was broken on a combat pistol and the propeller made several turns.  The combat pistol was replaced."

  3.) Kriegetagebuch "U-45":
"Eto in tube I was full of water and gas.  Short circuit in the battery.  To unload and reload another torpedo proceeded submerged at depth 50 meters."

"The lashing of the M.G.C/30 again proved to be completely inadequate. After the first heavy weather, the weapon was out of service for the remainder of the patrol."

  4.) Kriegetagebuch "U-47":
"It was the English steamer "GARTAVON" from Glasgow with 2900 tons of ore for Glasgow  Shipping company Gart Line, Ltd.
One torpedo shot with depth setting 7 meters with 6 meter draft did not detonate.  A second torpedo apparently malfunctioned (came out of the water, probably steered a bayonet)."
