Jackson went to investigate S.S. Tiger torpedoed at 2300 Q, March 31st, about 10 miles S/E of Cape Henry, She reported 3 lifeboats full of men about 15 miles S/E of Cape Henry. Jackson at 0445 Q, April 1st, is towing Tiger into Hampton Roads. At 1450 Q, Norfolk reported Tiger cut loose from towing vessel and is sinking. Ship had a list of 35°.

Cole sent to search region where S.S. Lochdon was reported torpedoed at 1722 Q, at 37-05 N., 61-40 W., 300 miles NNE of Bermuda.

Hamilton at 0340 reported that while searching for sub, she found American Tanker Byron D. Benson, afire 10 miles south of Currituck Light. Picked up 27 men from one boat, 10 men missing, including captain and all mates. Survivors all in good condition. Crew believes only one lifeboat launched. Sea calm. Set and drift zero. Roper, Herbert and Noa ordered to assist in attack. St. Zeno picked up 41 survivors (Captain and entire crew) -- 3 are injured.

Herbert at 1045 Q made contact at 201° T, 81 miles from Five Fathom Bank. At 1600 Herbert reported contact was a motor vessel wreck, probably the India Arrow. (Wreck file strengthens this probability).
 
Herbert searched area for two hours where S.S. Sithonia reported sub sighted, at 1110 Q, 2 miles south Great Gull Bank Buoy, near Ocean City, Md., about 38-16 N., 75-00 W. Results negative. Resumed patrol.
HAMBELTON & EMMONS
Wimble Shoals to Cape Lookout
Hambelton reported S.S. Bidwell torpedoed at 0207 Q, at 34-23 N., 75-56 W. (about 30 miles S/E of Cape Lookout). One man lost, one injured. At 0700 Q Hambelton stood by temporarily and later reported Bidwell proceeding independently. Hambelton lost first doubtful sub contact but started search to regain control.

        HMS ST. CATHAN in collision with SS HEBE at 0215 Q April 11 at 33-10° N, 78-17° W. ST. CATHAN had crew of 39, of which 9 were saved. HEBE had entire crew of 31 saved. BERYL and AZURLITE picked up these survivors, plus 1 dead body and proceeded to Charleston.
 
        MANLEY picked up 10 lifeboats, about 290 persons, all presumably from the ULYSSES torpedoed 1640 Q at 34-23° N, 75-35° W.

Tourmaline was at buoy but was unable to contact German sub which departed at high speed.

        Roper picked up 30 survivors of S.S. Desert Light off Hatteras. Being landed at Morehead City. Vessel torpedoed at 1203 Q, April 16 in 35-35 N, 72-48 W.

At 1640 Q reported third deliberate attack with depth charge pattern on firm contact at 1612 Q. Spreading oil patches 3 miles long, 200 yards wide. Position buoyed, standing by.

        HMS Lady Elsa picked up 47 survivors including 4 women (believed to comprise all survivors) of the S.S. Ashkhabad (Russian Cargo, 5284 tons) torpedoed and sunk in 34-19 N, 76-31 W (18 miles south of Cape Lookout). Navy plane sighted sub and dropped bomb.

Roper - searching for Empire Drum survivors 36-54 N, 70-49 W.
        Roper picked up 14 survivors, including chief officer, of Empire Drum in 37-47 N, 71-28 W. This is second lifeboat to be picked up of 3 launched from this sinking; one boat with 13 men still missing. Chief officer reports that sub came alongside his lifeboat and was Italian I-44. Marking had been painted over.
Cuyahoga - protecting Kewaydin, diving operations.
